AIBEA's letter to IBA on "Full Day working on 7th April, 2012 , Saturday" :

AIBEA/GS/2012/41                                                                4-4-2012

TO
Chairman
Indian Banks Association
Mumbai

Dear Sir,
Reg: Full Day working on 7th April, 2012 , Saturday

Our attention has been drawn to the advisory communication sent by the Government on 2-4-2012 to the IBA and Member Banks that Banks are to consider functioning for full day on Saturday, the 7th April, 2012 in view of Bank holidays on 5th and 6th April, 2012.

We also learn that based on this, the Banks are advising their Branches to function for full day on 7th April.

In this regard, we have to bring to your notice the following:

  1. 5th and 6th April are not holidays in the Banks in all the States.
  2. It is only one day holiday ( either 5th or 6th) in States like Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Goa, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Orissa, Puduchery, Rajasthan, Sikkim, West Bengal.
  3. In States like Gujarat, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Punja, J & K, both 5th and 6th are working days.
  4. Only in few States like UP, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Uttrakhand both the days are holidays.
Hence we feel that there is no need to work for the full day on 7th April in all the States covred by 2 and 3 above.

Further in States like Kerala, Goa, 6th is a holiday for Good Friday and 8th April , Sunday is Easter and hence on all the 3 days there will be more religious activities both for the bank staff and for banking public.  Hence, keeping 7th April for full day is more an inconvenience than any help.

Moreover, OT wages are payable to the staff who are required to work extra working hours and hence functioning for full day by the Branches is to be considered only where it is necessary.

While we understand and appreciate the spirit behind the communication from the Government, it should not be implemented mechanically everywhere.  We request you to advice all the Banks accordingly.

Since time is short, we expect your instructions immediately.

Thanking you
Yours faithfully,
