  PRESS RELEASE                                                                                       28th February, 2012
ALL INDIA GENERAL STRIKE – TOTAL SUCCESS
Ø AGAINST GOVERNMENT’S ANTI-LABOUR POLICIES
Ø AGAINST BANKING SECTOR REFORMS
Ø AGAINSAT OUTSOURCING BANK JOBS
Ø AGAINST IMPOSITION OF KHANDELWAL COMMITTEE REPORT
Ø AGHAINST INCREASING NPAs IN BANKS
The National General Strike at the joint call of all the Central Trade Unions today has received unprecedented response from all sections of workers.  Nearly 10 crores of workers have taken part in this strike.  It was a historic success.
The strike is against the increasing attacks on workers:  The globalization and liberalization policies of the Government have added to the miseries of the common people and workers.  Exploitation of the workers is on the increase. There is huge job loss for the workers and nearly 40 lacs of workers have lost their job in the recent years.  While employers are getting bailed out, workers interests are sold out.  Labour laws are being violation by the employers and Government is openly supporting the employers.  Public sector is being disinvested and privatised.  Alarming price rise is seriously affecting the workers and in fact all sections of the common people.  Government is insensitive to the problems of the workers and no steps are being taken to address these issues.  Hence we welcome the strike call.
STRIKE - TOTAL SUCCESS IN BANKS :  The strike in the banks was a total success.  The functioning of the Banks including RBI and State Bank of India were seriously affected because of the strike.  Cash transactions, cheques clearing operations, foreign exchange operations, treasury operations, Government transactions, etc, could not be carried out due to the strike.  Employees of Public Sector Banks including State Bank of India, employees of RBI, employees of old generation private banks, foreign banks, Regional  Rural Banks, Co-operative Banks, IDBI Bank, NABARD, etc. participated in the strike and hence the banking sector was virtually paralysed.
As per reports reaching us from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur, Patiala, Bangalore, Cochin, Hyderabad, Raipur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Nagpur, Allahabad, Patna, Jammu, Jamshedpur, Guwahati, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, etc. the strike has been very successful throughout India.  Employees held processions, rallies, demonstrations, etc. to mark the strike.  In West Bengal, despite various provocations from the State Government, the strike was complete.  Five of our leaders and activists were even arrested by the police in Kolkata.
In the Banking Sector, the following Unions had given the call for Strike.
1.                             All India Bank Employees Association - AIBEA
2.                             National Confederation of Bank Employees - NCBE
3.                             All India Bank Officers Association - AIBOA

We thank all the bank employees and officers for making the strike a total success today.
We seek the indulgence of the banking public for the inconvenience caused to them due to the striker but the strike became unavoidable due to the insensitive and casual approach of the Government to the increasing problems of the working class caused due to their pro-capital neo-liberal economic policies.
If the Government would not come forward to resolve the demands of the trade unions, the struggle would be further intensified.
